Income Inequality and Violent Crime Key Points

چکیده
As early as 1993 an analysis of 34 studies of violent crime concluded that there was a robust tendency for rates of violence to be higher in more unequal societies [1]. In 1997, Messner and Rosenfeld [3] said “A finding that has emerged with remarkable consistency is that high rates of homicide tend to accompany high levels of inequality in the distribution of income.” Two years later in a study of 50 countries, Lee and Bankston [4] concluded that “. . . economic inequality is positively and significantly related to rates of homicide despite an extensive list of conceptually relevant controls.” Since then the evidence that violence is higher in countries with bigger income differences between rich and poor has not only continued to accumulate, but has also continued to be ignored by governments.

Examining the Relationship between Income Inequality and Varieties of Crime in the United States by
This paper examines the relationship between income equality and crime using U.S. statewide panel data for the years 1981 to 1999. After controlling for demographics and the rates of poverty and unemployment, I find a robust negative relationship between income inequality and the violent and property crime rates. I conclude that rising income inequality during those two decades did not lead to ...

The degree of income inequality in Sweden has varied substantially since the 1970s. This study analyzes whether this variation has affected the crime rate using a panel of Swedish county-level data for the period 1973–2000. We consider various measures of income inequality to evaluate which part of the distribution that matters most in determining crime rates. Our results indicate that there is...

The growth in income inequality over the last 25 years was tracked by the growth in prison and jail incarceration rates. We report age-specific incarceration rates by education, race and ethnicity and relate these to the growing dispersion of men’s incomes. We then review research linking the growth in the penal system to rising inequality. Some researchers trace rising inequality to rising cri...
متن کاملViolence as a public health problem: An ecological study of 169 countries☆
Individual level risk factors for violence have been widely studied, but little is known about country-level determinants, particularly in low and middle-income countries. We hypothesized that income inequality, through its detrimental effects on social cohesion, would be related to an increase in violence worldwide, and in low and middle-income countries in particular. We examined country-leve...
